The students in Brenda Carlson’s FSHD 1391 Special Topics in Fashion Design and Illustration class have been working with Med Couture, a Farmers Branch scrub company. This class is much like “Project Runway” so the students met the owners/ designers of companies and worked on specific challenges. This time around the students got to tour Med Couture, met most of the employees, work with the designer Julie Schragin, the patternmaker Raquel Moreno, and the owner Barry Rothschild. The students saw how they use Gerber Technology in pattern making and production.
The students were charged to design medical scrubs- two tops and one pant- for millennials. They went through the process of sketch submissions, a first prototype review, and then made a final presentation on October 16 at Med Couture’s headquarters.
Med Couture generously provided the students with signature fabric and trims throughout this project. Michael’s provided scissors, elastic, thread, and notions, too. JWA Public Relations followed the students’ progress and created video and marketing materials to showcase this partnership.
The top two students with the best designs won scholarships from Med Couture! Congratulations to Alejandra “Alex” Ruiz who won a $1,000 Scholarship and Kyle Hermesch who received a $500 scholarship.
