DALLAS—It was a brisk and breezy start for runners at the 7th annual Brookhaven College Spooky Trot as spirited participants lined up for the 5K fun run Oct. 26, kicking off DCCCD Homecoming Week. More than 500 pounds of nonperishable food and $418 were donated by 75 pre-registered race participants, students, staff and the local community to restock the campus food pantry.
AXA Advisors sponsored the event and Brookhaven College Office of Student Life organized and coordinated the race.
"Communal events, such as the Spooky Trot 5k, provide our Brookhaven community a great opportunity to meet and mingle outside of our classrooms and offices in a welcoming environment," said Anthony Krajewski, program services specialist. "What makes Spooky Trot special is its ability to provide this environment while also supporting our campus food pantry."
The race may be over but the need fight hunger by supporting the college food bank is ongoing. Contact Student Life at 972-860-4115 to donate 10 nonperishable food items or make a $10 contribution and receive a Spooky Trot 2018 T-shirt, while supplies last.
"From the staff who planned, to the volunteers who helped, to runners who participated and donated, this is a Brookhaven community event, and I think that's a big reason we've seen such a positive response," said Krajewski.
