DALLAS—Step into spring for a day of family activities at the Brookhaven College Heroes Run April 14 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. to celebrate the brave and committed individuals who rescue, protect and serve both at home and abroad. Honor their spirit of service and support DCCCD college food banks.
In addition to the 5K race and obstacle course, the event offers a day of free, fun-filled activities.
- Firetrucks and a fire hose for children's fire safety lessons
- Police armored tank car, military vehicles and CareFlite helicopter
- Try on the gear of different first responder units, battle gear, firefighter, tactical police, and take 22 steps to honor the veterans lost to suicide at a rate of 22 cases every day
- Kids obstacle course, bounce house and face painting
- Dallas Mavericks Dancers

- Free food from Chuy's of Addison and Chick-fil-A of Addison
- Vendors and exhibits
- KEGL, 97.1 The Eagle, kicks off the race broadcasting remotely from the college
The registration fee for the 5K run is $35 through April 13 and $45 day of race. An all-day access pass to the obstacle course is $10. All fees go to a permanent fund for campus food banks to ensure that our students and communities have this important resource available.
All registrants get an event t-shirt and a ticket for a free run through the obstacle course. First responders, current military and veterans also receive a commemorative paracord wristband.
Come out to run or just enjoy a day of family fun to salute our heroes and support the district food banks. Heroes Run is a free event open to the public.
The Brookhaven College Heroes Run was organized and coordinated by Cpl. Vikki Ethington, DCCCD police officer assigned to Brookhaven College. As a police officer, she knows the perils and sacrifices first responders face every day.
"The inspiration for the run was to recognize those who serve and their willingness to be the first in and last out of dangerous situations," Ethington said. "But, really I just wanted to do something that would help our students get the food they too often need."
Brookhaven College is dedicated to student success. Being a student is challenging under the best of circumstances, but it is difficult to be a successful learner when there isn't enough to eat or you are worried where the next meal will come from.
Food insecurity, a lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life, is a real problem facing our students and our community. Forty six percent of students in the district cannot afford to eat balanced meals and 42 percent skip meals because there isn't enough money to buy food. Cuts in governmental support programs, rising food costs, rising education costs, plus limited job options for individuals attending college all contribute to this crisis. The food banks at campuses throughout the district provide essential support to the community.
