(DALLAS) — Georgeann Moss, former director of digital communications for the Dallas County Community College District, has been named DCCCD’s first executive administrator for sustainability outreach and initiatives. Members of the DCCCD board of trustees approved her appointment last November.
Moss now is responsible for three areas related to sustainability outreach and initiatives: operations, education/outreach and partnerships. “I will serve as a catalyst and change agent within the district to help us become more sustainable in our operations. We need to walk the talk in our operations if we’re going to preach sustainability to our students, faculty, administrators, staff and community,” she said.
DCCCD has supported sustainability activities, business practices and partnerships for years; the new position solidifies that dedication to sustainable practices, learning and outreach. Several of the district’s newer buildings are LEED-certified as well.
Moss will use the United Nations’ “17 Sustainable Development Goals” as the teaching and learning framework for DCCCD’s educational initiatives as the district builds cultural support for sustainability.
“Many Texans still don’t know exactly what sustainability is. But when you show them those U.N. guidelines, their faces light up because almost everyone believes they are worthy goals,” said Moss.
“Our job is to teach our students that sustainability isn’t a burden — it’s actually the opposite,” she explained. “Sustainability is a cultural movement that is embraced by business and industry because it is good for their bottom line and their reputation. Our students’ future employers most likely will expect them to know how to manage for sustainability, regardless of their position in the organization.”
Prior to her first days at DCCCD in marketing, Moss worked for Dallas Water Utilities in its community relations division, where she did public speaking and produced community events that encouraged the city’s residents to conserve water. She was involved in the DWU production titled “Our Planet Dallas,” which was held on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day and later became the Sustainable Dallas conference.
After Sustainable Dallas fulfilled its five-year commitment to produce that event, DCCCD began presenting its Sustainability Summits in 2011 — a program that recently received a “Sustainable Leadership Award” in the large business or nonprofit project category from GreenSource DFW.
“And DCCCD will continue to partner with organizations that have similar goals because we believe in community partnerships — and because it’s part of our name and who we are: the Dallas County Community College District,” said Moss.
Moss joined DCCCD in 1998. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Amberton University in Dallas in human relations and business and her master’s degree in business administration from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. A Sunnyvale resident, she is married to King Moss II and has three sons and three grandchildren.
