(DALLAS) — Dr. Grant Sisk is one of a kind. In 2017, he was the single Fulbright Scholar representing the Dallas County Community College District — Brookhaven College, specifically — and that honor resulted in a trip to Russia.
Recently, he also was included on a list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2017-2018 Fulbright U.S. Scholars. The list, which was announced in February by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, also was published in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Sisk currently serves as interim project manager for global programming and relations in the district’s office of global economic development.
During the spring 2017 semester, Sisk said goodbye to Texas for several weeks and joined administrators from five other U.S. community colleges on a Fulbright Scholarship team for a tour of Russia. He visited Russian schools, colleges and universities; he and his team members also met with government officials to discuss the differences between American and Russian education systems, share best practices and identify areas for collaboration.
The tour included six cities in Russia and meetings with more than 30 administrators and government officials at 11 different higher education institutions, ranging from technical/vocational schools to research universities. During each school visit, Sisk gave presentations, too.
Sisk also was invited to become the Fulbright Program liaison for DCCCD and a peer reviewer for upcoming Fulbright programs. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 380,000 participants — all chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Each year, more than 1,100 college and university faculty members and administrators, professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers and independent scholars are awarded Fulbright grants to teach and/or conduct research.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholars Program, which operates in more than 125 countries, is a program of the U.S. Department of State, funded by an annual appropriation from Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
