Learn More About Mammography

Mammography is a specialized form of radiology that focuses on examining patients for breast cancer. Technologists work directly with patients and create X-rays to help radiologists search for possible tumors.

Experienced radiologic technologists teach the mammography course at Brookhaven, and classes are kept small to encourage student participation. A pathway to clinical training is available for students after taking the course.

To prepare for work in this high-demand, growing career field, you’ll build skills in:

  • Patient care and communication
  • Breast anatomy and physiology
  • Quality assurance techniques

Qualifications

Mammography is a secondary certification that is acquired through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). To pursue this certification, candidates must either be certified as radiologic technologists or be radiologic technology students in their final semester. Please note that completion of the clinical course requires a drug screening and criminal background check.

Mammographers are on the front lines of breast cancer detection. Their work is extremely up close and personal, and they are imaging patients who are often anxious or scared. Students find that this modality gives them an opportunity to combine both their people skills and technology skills.
