What to Expect as a Patient

  • The Dallas College Dental Hygiene Clinic is a teaching facility. Patients are accepted based on the educational needs of the students as a key priority.
  • Being a patient in the dental hygiene clinic does not guarantee extended or ongoing dental hygiene services.
  • The range of services provided is aligned with the educational goals of the clinic. Dental restorative needs such as extractions, fillings, implants and crowns fall outside the scope of the student’s preventive dental hygiene training.
  • Having your teeth cleaned in the Dallas College dental hygiene clinic is not a substitute for regular dental visits.
  • Patients will be informed of their treatment needs. Patients requiring services beyond the scope of the program will receive a dental referral. A list of community dental clinics is available.
  • Treatment takes considerably longer in comparison to private dental practices. Appointments are four hours in length and services often require multiple appointments to complete.

Patient Appointments

First appointment

New patients require an initial screening appointment to determine their eligibility for assignment to a student. A screening appointment is not required for patients under age 18.

For All Appointments

  • Unaccompanied minors (under age 18) are not allowed in the waiting room unless supervised by a legal guardian and are not allowed in the clinical area unless they are a patient. If this rule is not followed, the patient will be dismissed and no treatment provided.
  • Appointments should be confirmed at least 24 hours prior to the appointment, or the appointment may be given to another patient. Patient cooperation in arriving on time is essential to the learning process and the continuity of dental hygiene preventive care.
  • A medical consultation from a health care provider may be needed prior to receiving treatment. This will be explained at your visit, if applicable. Patients are expected to be respectful and considerate of Dallas College faculty, students and other patients. Any unbecoming behavior will result in dismissal from the dental hygiene clinic.
  • Children under three years of age may not be mature enough for clinical care, and a referral to a children's specialist (Pediatric Dentist) may be required.

Nondiscrimination Notice
