Dr. Shawnda Floyd

Dr. Shawnda Floyd
Provost, Dallas College

Dr. Shawnda Floyd is a down-to-earth leader who believes in the transformative power of education. With decades of experience in higher education. Dr. Floyd uses her connectedness to create pathways of preparation for students entering the workforce.

Jessica Lucas

Jessica Rivera-Lucas
Manager of Board Relations and Executive Operations, Workers Defense Project

Jessica Rivera-Lucas, a First Generation Latina, is a community advocate, nonprofit leader, and proud daughter of resilience whose work is rooted in lived experience and a deep commitment to giving back. That understanding fuels her leadership.

Jessica began her career in corporate America before she shifted to an educator in Richardson ISD, where she spent seven years working closely with students and families. It was there that she saw how access, representation, and advocacy could change a child’s trajectory. Over the years, Jessica has dedicated herself to civic engagement, coalition building, and strengthening democratic participation across North Texas. Her volunteer and community-centered leadership led to her being featured in Democracy Retrograde, recognizing her commitment to showing up for her community and advancing inclusive civic spaces.

Today, Jessica serves at Workers Defense, where she helps strengthen operations and strategy while advancing immigrant and worker rights across Texas. She believes deeply in building power through collective action and ensuring that working families have both voice and protection.

Her commitment to servant leadership extends beyond her professional role. Jessica serves on the boards of the League of Women Voters of Dallas and Somos Tejas and has contributed to leadership efforts within the League of Women Voters of Texas, the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (Dallas Chapter), and the City of Richardson’s inaugural Community Inclusion and Equity Commission. In every space she enters, she works to make civic participation more inclusive, accessible, and reflective of the communities it serves.

Above all, Jessica is a proud wife, mother of three daughters, and a loving fabuela to her granddaughter. Her leadership is grounded in the example she hopes to set for them—that giving to your community is more than service; it is responsibility, love, and legacy.
