Dallas College is hosting a Veterans Mental Health Summit and Resource Fair on Sept. 22.

Finding meaning and purpose after military service

Presentations and discussion groups will focus on positive psychology and exploring ways to find meaning and purpose in life after the military. Veterans, mental health practitioners, students and veteran supporters are encouraged to attend.

The summit is a collaborative education and outreach initiative between Dallas College Military Connected Services and Counseling and Psychological Services, as well as the VA North Texas Healthcare System.

Panel Discussion 1: Transition +1, Day 1 as a Veteran

Military life offers a sense of routine, structure, and purpose that is difficult to replicate in civilian life. This session will discuss the lived experiences of transitioning from military service to civilian life for veterans and the challenges that are often faced. Experiences of preparation for transition, challenges, faced, and success in navigation the new reality of civilian life. Strategies and techniques for resiliency may be discussed.

  • Kasey King
    Speaker:
    Kasey King, LMFT

Kasey King is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Relationship Specialist. She is the owner of Lavender Healing Center, PLLC, a private therapy practice that services married couples, veterans and individuals with generational trauma. Kasey is passionate about empowering others to take control of their lives and build healthy marriages. Notably, Kasey is a Navy Veteran and spouse of a Navy Seabee, who just retired after 23 years of service.

Panel Discussion 2: Expanding Scaffolding in Transition Support

Family members, friends, fellow veterans, clergy members, co-workers and counselors can play a critical role in the discovery of meaning and purpose after military service. This session will discuss the roles and experiences of this expanded support system in the transition experience for veterans.

1:45-2:20 p.m.

Panel Discussion 3: Tactics, Tools , and Tips to Thriving

This session will emphasize the focus on increasing awareness of one’s mental and physical state so that they can excel in other areas of life. The idea that the mission (which is of their choosing or in collaboration with key people in their life) can only be fulfilled if they are as diligent about tapping into their relationships and finding resolve with aspects of their past that contribute to emotional heaviness.
