Jzantil Hopkins-Swanson shares her Dallas College experience, reflecting on her journey from military service, hairstyling and parenthood to higher education. After first attending Dallas College as a dual credit student, she continued pursuing her academic goals and is now working toward a doctorate degree. Her dream is to open a trade school that equips students with valuable skills and provides the support and opportunities they need to succeed, regardless of their background.

Dallas College has been approved for its third bachelor's degree with this new program.

Eighty Dallas College students, along with 14 advisors, traveled to the Texas Capitol in Austin on Feb. 3 to participate in Community College Day. With more than 900 students from across Texas attending, Dallas College had the largest delegation at the event. Students showcased the importance of community colleges and how decisions made directly affects students like them.

Osvaldo Rodriguez attended Dallas College so he could continue his education while supporting his mother during her battle with cancer. For him, his mother's recovery and his upcoming graduation as a first-generation college student have made his journey even more meaningful. Dallas College also helped him develop his passion for art and explore future career opportunities, including become an art educator.

Dr. Rick W. Smith has an extensive background spanning more than 30 years of broad experience in media, development, health care and education.

Russ Pearlman will lead the college's IT strategy and promote continued innovation.

Dallas College’s Self-Portrait Art Contest encourages students to showcase their creativity this semester while celebrating their individuality and highlighting who they are. Deadline to submit artwork is Monday, March 24 and the winners will be announced at the Art Show on Friday, April 11 in the Tree Top Lounge at the Mountain View Campus.

The foundation welcomed seven new board members and announced Regen Horchow as its new board chair.

One night, as he was watching his two children play, LeShawn Lee knew he had to break the cycle. He, just like his dad, had not graduated high school. Fast-forward to today and Lee is now a college graduate. He finished Dallas College’s Welding Technology associate degree program in December and will walk the coveted graduation stage in May.

Over a 40-year career, Dr. Christa Slejko could point to dozens of memorable moments and achievements. She has championship rings from North Lake’s athletics teams winning national titles. She smiles when she walks by the big horse statue on campus that was built by Dallas College faculty and welding students to celebrate the school’s 40th anniversary.

Through the Office of International Engagement and Global Competitiveness (IEGC), the college started offering what is known as COIL — collaborative online international learning — opportunities in the Fall semester. The program is expanding its efforts in the Spring.

Art is a puzzle. That’s a phrase professor Tina Medina likes to share with her students, and she’s been helping them solve that puzzle since joining Dallas College as an art professor in 2006. After almost two decades of teaching students, it never gets old when she sees a student figure out a solution to the puzzle.
