Dallas College professor and U.S. Army Captain Steven Drayton spent a combined 30 months overseas during two deployments to the Middle East. His most heroic efforts, though, occurred stateside during a routine visit to a barbershop in August 2022 in his hometown of Killeen. As we celebrate Veterans Day this month, Dallas College is proud to highlight veterans such as Drayton who continue to serve our community and country.

On Oct. 29, Dallas College held its annual Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony, recognizing 10 outstanding alumni who, through their service and accomplishments, personify the Dallas College tradition of excellence.

The search for new president of the North Lake Campus is currently underway.

Handshake, a career platform for students, gave Dallas College a Handshake Career Spark Award in recognition of the college's employer engagement and reporting and analytics.

Dallas College ESOL students and professor Minjung Park wrote 1,000 encouragement cards for breast cancer patients during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The cards will be included in National Breast Cancer Foundation HOPE Kits sent across the country. The project helped students make a positive impact while strengthening their connection to the community.

Coalition members collaborate to exchange information and enhance the role their institutions play in urban settings.

Dallas College is hosting tournaments in three sports in the coming weeks: women’s soccer, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

Harrison Nguyen, a Dallas College student with autism, overcame family issues, depression and learning challenges to build confidence and succeed in college. Through support from Dallas College Accessibility Services and involvement in SkillsUSA, he developed leadership skills and helped lead an award-winning voter engagement project that encouraged more than 1,000 people to vote. Harrison hopes his story inspires others to embrace their differences to pursue their goals.

The college's fully online RN-BSN program offers an affordable option for students looking to earn a bachelor's degree.

Dr. Tracie Lowe, Royce Nwankwo, Dr. Toniette Haynes Robinson, Rochelle Ragas and Dr. LaJuanda Jones will join the program, designed to equip participants with the skills necessary for future executive leadership roles in higher education.

Be Pro Be Proud's mobile workshops help middle and high schoolers learn about jobs in construction, welding, manufacturing, transportation and utilities.

Reyes is one of 45 fellows from across the country chosen to prepare for leadership roles in institutions of higher learning, emphasizing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and emerging HSIs.

Krystal Morrow’s gift for writing poetry received recognition as her poem, “Soothed,” earned a League for Innovation literary award. Morrow and fellow League for Innovation award winner, Cadence Glidewell, were honored during Dallas College’s Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 1.

The three new programs empower students to reach their full potential and foster self-determination, community inclusion and meaningful work.

Dallas College alumna Maricsa Trejo turned her passion for baking into the award-winning La Casita Bakeshop after studying in the college's culinary program and taking a leap of faith to start her own business. Through perseverance and support from her family, she grew the bakery into one of the most recognized brunch destinations in North Texas, earning accolades such as a James Beard Award finalist nomination and a Food Network appearance.
