Influenza Information and Resources

Influenza better known as the “flu” is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The two main types of flu are type A and type B. Both types are spread among humans.

In addition to the flu vaccine, these preventive measures can help stop the spread of the flu:

  • Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like mpox.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
    • Masks may also help reduce the spread.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Virus in the air can spread between people more easily indoors than outdoors.

Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle or body aches
  • headaches
  • fatigue (tiredness)
  • Most people with flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick with flu symptoms, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people.
  • CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
  • Seek medical care if symptoms worsen.
