What Is brain health?

Brain health includes both how well your brain functions and how effectively you use it in everyday life.

The Center for BrainHealth focuses on helping people become more intentional about how they use their attention and mental energy. That can include focusing on what matters most, thinking beyond memorization, making connections between ideas, approaching problems in new ways and allowing time for the brain to recharge.

BrainHealth strategies can help you explore ways to:

  • Strengthen focus and attention
  • Think more deeply and strategically
  • Build critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Manage stress more effectively
  • Develop habits that support well-being
  • Strengthen skills that support success in college, work and life

What are some strategies for supporting brain health?

Improving how you use your brain doesn't necessarily mean doing more.

Sometimes it means becoming more intentional about how you think, focus and use your mental energy.

Focus on one thing at a time.

Trying to focus on multiple tasks at once can divide your attention. Reducing unnecessary task switching can help you direct more of your mental energy toward what matters most.

Make connections instead of only memorizing.

When learning something new, look for connections between ideas and consider how new information relates to what you already know. Identifying key takeaways and broader meaning can support deeper thinking.

Give your brain downtime.

Your brain needs opportunities to recharge. Taking breaks from constant information and stimulation — such as going for a walk without your phone — can give your brain periods of downtime.

Be intentional with your attention.

Not every task or piece of information requires the same amount of mental energy. Consider what matters most and where your attention and effort can have the greatest impact.
