Teacher Assistant Preparation

The Teacher Assistant Preparation program prepares you for employment as a teacher assistant or instructional aide in K-12 schools. This noncredit workforce program helps you build practical classroom skills while exploring the teaching profession.

You’ll learn how to support teachers, work with students, and help create positive learning environments. The program also prepares you to continue your education in other Dallas College School of Education programs.

Program Courses

The Teacher Assistant Preparation Certificate consists of two classes totaling 144 contact hours and should take two months to complete. Both courses are offered in-person and online, giving you flexibility to fit this program into your schedule.

This course focuses on the role of the teacher assistant in supporting classroom behavior and learning. Topics include:

  • Identifying student needs
  • Supporting classroom management
  • Applying basic behavior strategies
  • Understanding teaching methods
  • Building positive relationships with teachers, families and school staff

This course introduces the teaching profession and the responsibilities of instructional aides. Topics include:

  • Theories of learning
  • Child development
  • Learning environment design
  • Instructional methods
  • Supporting diverse student populations

Program Requirements

  • You must complete both EDTC 1017 and EDTC 1011 to earn the Teacher Assistant Preparation Occupational Skills Award.
  • To apply for the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Educational Aide Certificate, you must first be employed by a Texas school district.

Career Pathways

This program prepares you for employment as a teacher assistant or instructional aide and serves as an introduction to the teaching profession. Completion may align to credit if you later enroll in a Dallas College School of Education program.
