Student Experience: Francisco Guerrero

“When I first started college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and I wasted about a year and a half figuring it out. My girlfriend’s brother was an electrician, and he seemed to be doing very well — so I figured if I went into electrical technology, I could always ask him for help. “I’ve learned a lot of common-sense skills, like being able to read a diagram and then knowing what to do with it. I like being able to identify symbols without a journeyman telling me what they are.

“I started off at my job just handing tools to the electricians; now, I have a helper myself. I like that there are no huge time pressures on the job. I worked for a while in the fast food industry, and you were always having to rush to get things done.

“The best thing I’ve learned besides reading plans is to always think ahead about your work, to think what the next step is going to be. I want to be able to comprehend what I need to do right away instead of asking over and over what to do.”

A 2006 graduate of Irving’s Nimitz High School, Francisco Guerrero is earning an associate degree in Electrical Technology from North Lake. He currently works in Carrollton.
