Student Experience: LaTasha Feaster
Tell us your story that led to where you are now.
“I joined the military in 2013, and it changed my life. I got married, had my daughter and thought life was headed in the right direction. Then my marriage ended, I left the military, COVID hit, and I moved back to South Carolina. I struggled to find work, childcare was limited, and it felt like life was hitting me all over again.
“Eventually, I realized I needed another change. I visited Texas, felt like it was the right move and within 30 days, I packed up my life and moved. Today, I’m still pursuing my education, raising my daughter, helping care for my mother and working toward my goal of graduation. It’s not easy, but I want to show my daughter that no matter what comes your way, you can still finish school.”
Do you feel like helping people is something you’re passionate about career-wise?
“Absolutely. When I first came to Dallas College, I pursued cybersecurity and was encouraged to work toward a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Once I got into the coursework, I realized it wasn’t for me. I don’t want to sit behind a desk all day or work from home. I love being around people. My biggest passion is children because they’re our future. That realization led me to change my major to Early Childhood Development.”
What legacy do you want to leave behind?
“I would want my daughter to be compassionate, caring and always striving to be better. Material things don’t matter. Compassion matters. Kindness matters. The world can be a difficult place, and we need people who care about others. If you asked how I want to be remembered, I’d say as a strong woman who never stopped pushing forward. Someone caring, compassionate, heartfelt and resilient. If you put those words next to my picture, the people who know me would say, ‘Yep, that’s her.’”
