“I was very fortunate to have had some of the best instructors at Dallas College. They were very eager to share their personal experiences in their related fields. Their open-door policy made it very convenient to have a one-on-one conversation and review any questions I had. As a licensed property tax consultant in the state of Texas, I really enjoyed the appraisal class. I work with appraisers at county appraisal districts negotiating lower values for our clients.

“I got into the real estate field completely by accident. I needed to work to help my family financially and went to work for a local temp agency. I was assigned a position at a property tax consulting firm as a general clerk — the work they did was intriguing to me and I later accepted a full-time position there. I left that firm eight years later as office manager. For the past three years, I have worked for my current employer as an associate as well as served as a licensed tax consultant.

“One of my instructors, Theda Redwine, also became a friend who I’m still in contact with and who was instrumental in getting me involved in the Real Estate Advisory Board. Her extensive knowledge and involvement in the Real Estate program is a great asset. I personally appreciated her positive attitude and outlook for all her students’ futures in this field.

“The best part of the Real Estate program was the professional contacts I made and have maintained. You leave Dallas College as a student, but you really don’t forget the contacts you made. You can always return, and someone will always be there to lend a hand. It’s great that you have the opportunity to do that, and that’s what I’m grateful for. Earning my associate degree was a great victory. Not only did it fulfill a personal goal, but it also has made me more valuable to my employer.”

Melinda Loredo attended Dallas College right after she graduated from high school, where she completed her studies and earned her associate degree in Real Estate in 2005.

“With my travel schedule it’s really hard to be in a classroom, and even when I’m in town my work hours are erratic. The strong point of taking courses online is the flexibility and freedom. I can just log on and do my homework at home or on the road in a hotel.”

“I’ve learned that it’s never too late for your dreams to come true — you just have to keep pushing. With patience and determination, hard work will pay off. It just takes getting started. Going back to school was definitely one of the best choices I’ve made in my life, and I’m starting to see it pay off.”
