Student Experience: Robert McKay

“I had one drafting course in high school, and then I got hired as an apprentice draftsman at Lone Star Gas in 1972. Over the years, I’ve worked my way up to where I am today.

“I first took CADD courses back in 1972, and Micheal Hutchins was my first teacher. I’ve been in the gas industry doing CADD-related work for going on 40 years, although now I oversee more than I do actual drawings.

“I’ve always used drafting in my job, since we draw land-based detailed drawings of installations. I’ve taken all kinds of CADD courses over the years, and they’ve all helped me.

“I like what I do. I’ve had the opportunity to help hire a new employee for Atmos from the program and been on the CADD Advisory Committee going on 14 years.”

Robert McKay has accumulated 52 hours of college credit hours in various general and CADD courses. He is a member of the CADD Advisory Committee and works in that capacity with instructor Micheal Hutchins, also the former CADD program director.

“You should never stop learning in today’s world. If you do, you get left behind like the dinosaurs. Once you have knowledge, though, no one can take it away from you. The most important thing I learned is how to have the tools you need in today’s workforce.”

“I’ve seen friends leave STEM because they didn’t believe in themselves. I tell them, if I can do it with everything going on in my life, you can too. That matters to me.”
