Student Experience: Vernessa Williams

“My best friend taught me how to build computers, and I wanted to go into that field. I discovered that I had a knack for understanding programming, and I was given a chance to start teaching computer courses. Then I got into Web design, which fascinated me and gave me a whole new love. 

“My instructors were the best part of my Dallas College experience. Going back to school was a scary thing for me at my age, but all of my instructors were willing to take me on. Doug Keenen became a mentor to me, and it was Gemmy Allen whose eCommerce classes really interested me in Web design. 

“My Dallas College education gave me a love to teach and share what I know. I’ve learned so much here — the faculty show you things that just aren’t in the book because they bring real-world experience to the classroom. 

“Everybody tells you that you need a college degree, but I didn’t know how much I’d love getting it. I’m just like a kid who’s just now found out what I want to be when I grow up.” 

Vernessa Williams earned an associate degree in Networking/Security and a bachelor’s degree in applied technology training and development from the University of North Texas. She is working on a master’s degree in computer education and cognition at UNT.
