Dual Credit Testing
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) helps determine whether students are ready for college-level coursework in reading, writing and math. For dual credit students, TSI requirements depend on the number of college credit hours you have completed. Before scheduling any testing, review the information below to understand when TSI requirements apply to you.
Please discuss your TSI plans with your high school counselor before initiating any testing.
TSI and the 15-Credit-Hour Rule
If you have completed fewer than 15 college credit hours:
You are considered a non-degree-seeking dual credit student and are not required to demonstrate college readiness through TSI.
This means you may enroll in courses that typically have TSI requirements, such as ENGL 1301 and MATH 1314, without first meeting college-readiness requirements.
Once you have completed 15 college credit hours:
You are required to declare a program of study (POS) and meet applicable TSI college-readiness requirements before registering for courses that require them. This also applies when retaking a course.
Before You Take the TSI Assessment
Talk with your high school counselor before scheduling any testing. You may already meet college-readiness requirements through an approved exemption or other qualifying measure and may not need to take the TSI assessment.
If testing is needed, your counselor can help you determine your next steps.
Please refer to the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Program webpage for specific information about TSI testing.
