At Dallas College, dreams can come true in unexpected programs. On June 18, Geoff Tchon and 13 classmates became the first-ever graduates of the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program. At least nine graduates secured employment before crossing the stage, highlighting the region's urgent need for skilled aviation talent.
“I had always loved airplanes growing up and so when I had a chance to start over, I fell right into it,” said Tchon. “I had a small business that ended up collapsing during COVID, and then when I was looking online, I found out that Dallas College was starting their aircraft maintenance program. I thought, yes. This is something I want to do for my future.”
The 13-month program prepares students for FAA General, Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) exams through hands-on training in a state-of-the-art hangar located at Dallas Executive Airport. Students also have access to modern classrooms outfitted with the latest technology at Dallas College Workforce Center at RedBird.
“It takes us from just raw students and turns us into professionals,’ Tchon said. “We are doing the work that we are going to be doing out in the field and working with the exact tools we would be using.”
The regional aerospace industry comprises more than 900 companies, accounting for one of every six jobs in North Texas. The median salary for aircraft mechanics and service technicians in DFW is $40.22 per hour or $80,000 annually. With over 6,900 aircraft mechanics employed in the region, Dallas College’s AMT program is positioned to help meet the growing demand for skilled aviation technicians.
“I’ve discovered it takes a lot of perseverance and determination,” said Tchon, “As well as not being afraid to roll up your sleeves and get your hands a little dirty.”
The second cohort started on May 18 as part of a 24-month program for students taking evening classes. The next 13-month program starts on July 6. Both cohorts are already full.
