Students Step Into History on Historical Legacy Tour

Dallas College students took learning beyond the classroom March 25–29, traveling through Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia for the Historical Legacy Tour, an immersive experience exploring sites central to the Civil Rights Movement.
From museums and memorials to historic sites, the trip offered more than a history lesson. It created a deeper connection for reflection and personal growth.
To bring this journey to life, we’re sharing one student’s firsthand account of what it means to walk through history, reflecting in real time and connecting the past to the present.

From Pages To Places: Learning Beyond Books
From the very first day, the trip was both educational and emotionally impactful. We visited a range of historical sites, museums and landmarks that highlighted the struggles and contributions of civil rights leaders, freedom fighters and foot soldiers. It was moving to see how people endured hardship and injustice while continuing to fight for equality and human rights. Being physically present at these sites created a strong emotional connection that cannot be achieved through textbooks alone.
Walking across the bridge in Selma was particularly powerful. It represented the courage, resilience and the determination of individuals who risked their lives to secure voting rights and equality. It was also meaningful to witness how some of my peers could trace their family history back to these movements. That personal connection added another layer of depth to the experience.
One of the most memorable moments for me was visiting Atlanta, Georgia, and seeing the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting the church and standing in the place where his journey began gave me a new perspective on his contributions and the lasting impact of his leadership. It was also meaningful to learn about the connection between the Civil Rights Movement and nonviolence movements around the world, including influences from India.
Growing Through Dialogue and Discovery
Beyond learning about history, the trip also helped me grow personally. Each evening, we participated in group discussions sharing our reflections. These conversations created a safe space for everyone to express their thoughts and perspectives. The advisors and professors motivated me to share my ideas and engage in discussions, which helped me overcome my fear of judgment.
Before this trip, I often hesitated to speak up and share my thoughts. However, the supportive environment encouraged me to participate more actively. As the trip progressed, I gained confidence and felt more comfortable expressing my ideas. This experience taught me that speaking up and engaging with others can lead to meaningful conversations and personal growth.
Overall, the Historical Legacy Tour was transformative. It deepened my understanding of history, strengthened my empathy and helped me grow both academically and personally. I learned that history is not just about dates and events. It is about the emotions, struggles and courage of people who shaped the world we live in today.
The trip also reminded me that education comes with responsibility. We have the opportunity to use our voices, stand up for what is right and contribute to positive change. This experience inspired me to carry these lessons forward and continue striving to make a meaningful impact in the world.
