On May 19-22, more than 60 Dallas College students stepped beyond their campuses and into the pine-lined setting of Camp Cho-Yeh at Carolina Creek in Huntsville for the annual Summer Student Leadership Retreat.

Centered on the ongoing theme of Soar Beyond Limits: Where Resilient Leaders Take Flight,” the experience blended leadership development, outdoor adventure and meaningful connection.

A Launchpad for Leadership

The retreat brought together a diverse mix of participants with about half already active student leaders, while the rest were exploring involvement for the first time. This intentional mix created an environment where students could learn from each other, share perspectives and build connections across all seven campuses.

Each morning, students participated in leadership sessions designed to strengthen practical skills and personal growth. Topics ranged from emotional intelligence, communication and connection to imposter syndrome and advocating for yourself. Additional sessions, such as Meeting Procedures 101 and Bachelor Bound Journey, provided tools students can apply both academically and professionally.

The retreat also featured a keynote address from Dr. Rick Smith, president of Dallas College North Lake Campus, who encouraged attendees to embrace their leadership potential and growth.

Taking Flight Through New Adventures

Afternoons shifted from classroom-style learning to hands-on adventure. Students tackled zip lines, ropes courses, climbing walls, canoeing, and even ax throwing, activities that challenged them to step outside their comfort zones and try something new.

“Our outdoor activities consisted of challenges, summer fun and pushing ourselves to try something new,” said participant Angela Lopez-Oliviere. “It was my first time getting on a zip line, and I can say it definitely wasn’t the last!”

Mid-Flight Moments of Connection and Reflection

Evenings offered space for both reflection and fun. Students gathered for open discussions, followed by social activities like karaoke and a movie night featuring “Top Gun,” a nod to the retreat’s aviation-inspired theme. The final night culminated in a campfire gathering, where participants shared their personal takeaways and celebrated the bonds they had formed.

For many attendees, these shared experiences created lasting memories and meaningful friendships.

Finding Your Place in the Flight Path

According to Dara Eason, coordinator, student leadership and development, the retreat’s greatest impact extended beyond skill-building.

“I think the biggest takeaway is the sense of belonging,” she said. “Students built friendships at the retreat, and now they’ve got a network of students across all seven campuses, not just their own campus.”

For Lopez-Oliviere, those connections were equally meaningful.

“The most memorable experience was gaining new friendships and staying off social media to live in the moment,” she shared.

Beyond friendships, students left with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation.

“My biggest take away from the retreat was the motivation and mindset to surround myself with leaders,” said Lopez-Oliviere. “That way we are all working toward our goals and we keep each other motivated.”

“This experience is something I will continue to recommend. I learned things like how to host an effective meeting, which I can now take back to both my educational and career life.”

By the end of the retreat, students didn’t just develop leadership skills, they gained confidence, community and a stronger connection to their college experience. As Eason noted, “They feel like they have ownership in the Dallas College experience. They’re fully invested, and that’s what we want for all of our students. We want everyone to feel like they have a place here.”

Through shared challenges, meaningful conversations and unforgettable moments, the Summer Student Leadership Retreat proved that leadership isn’t just about taking charge; it’s about lifting each other up and soaring together.
