The two largest community colleges in North Texas cemented an agreement Wednesday to address the region's record-breaking job creation and boost economic vitality.

Maris Rodriguez was a high school dropout and didn’t think she had much of a future. Because of Dallas College and the STEM Institute, Maris has been rejuvenated with life and is now pursuing a dream of working for NASA. Maris recently was part of the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program at the Ames Research Center in California.

Dallas College continues to lead the way when it comes to innovative practices in training the future workforce. The latest development is the college purchasing two simulators that use virtual reality to help students become forklift operators. These simulators, built by BluWorkz, a veteran-owned company, provide as close to a real-life experience as you can imagine.

Dallas College officially launched its RN-BSN bachelor's degree program, expanding opportunities for registered nurses to advance their education and careers without leaving the community college system. Ngai Ning's journey took him from Myanmar to Malaysia and eventually to Dallas as a refugee, where he overcame language and barriers and cultural differences with the support of his family and teachers. After enrolling at Dallas College, he switched from engineering to business and discovered a passion for photography and videography, leading to freelance work and an internship with FC Dallas.

Dallas College alum Soraya Burgos earned second place in the League for Innovation's international art competition for her painting, "Sonsonate, 2a Calle Poniente," which was inspired by a trip to her family's native country El Salvador. The four-panel artwork took more than 100 hours to complete and captures everyday life in Sonsonate through warm orange and red tones that reflect the country's climate and culture.
