Navigate Student Desktop App Quick Guide: My Major

  1. Select My Major. Notice, inside the Current Major information box, there is an option to select the Favorites heart icon. 
    From the Navigate links, select My Major to view the currently chosen Program of Study (also called Major).

  2. At the top left corner of this screen, above the Current Major box, there is an option to Search majors. 
    At the top right corner of the My Major page is a Search textbox.

  3. Notice the example below shows search results for majors related to nursing. 
    Nursing is typed in the search textbox. Related majors (programs of study) for nursing are shown in a vertical list, starting with Invasive Cardiovascular Technology, then Vocational Nursing.

  4. Inside the Current Major box, there is a link to review information about the possibility of required developmental coursework for this major. 
    Within the Current major box, click the link Developmental Courses.

  5. Majors requiring 42 credit hours or less for graduation do not require developmental coursework. For all other majors, the need for developmental courses is determined by a student scores on the Texas Success Initiative Assessments in reading, writing and math.

  6. Select Go Back
    At the top left corner of the page, select Go back to return to the prior page.

  7. Notice there is a brief summary about this major including
    • Required credit hours for graduation
    • Average annual salary
    • Estimated current need for people in the workforce with this knowledge and skill. 
      In the Current Major box, the major is CIT - SQL Server Certificate. Highlighted areas are: required credits is 20, hiring demand is medium, average salary is %56k to $147k.

  8. In the Current Major box, click on the View More Details hyperlink located in the bottom left corner. 
    In the Current Major box, located at the bottom right corner, click the link view more details.

  9. The More Details information includes a brief summary about the career path for this certification. Also provided is a brief description of the career responsibilities, a link to the academic plan and a list of suggested career options. 
    A new page opens with an additional description of career path for this major, followed by a link Explore the academic plan, then by the section Top Career Suggestions, having a list and details of career options related to this major.

  10. Select Explore the Academic Plan hyperlink. 
    Below the current major box, click the link

  11. Notice the list of required courses for this major. 
    A new page opens showing a list of the required classes for this major. Each class has a drop-down menu option to view a description of the class.

  12. Select Go back. 
    At the top right corner of this page, click the link Go back to return to the previous page.

  13. Notice there are four additional menu options when you scroll down on this page. 
    Under the Current Major box, the Consider these section provides four additional links.

  14. The first menu option is to view your major explorer results (first completed during the set-up of your desktop app). Selecting this will bring the student to last page of the Major Explorer Assessment.

    • The student may use the filter icon (located at the top right corner on this page) to filter by: Fit (Best Match), Name, Credits, Salary and Hiring Demand. 
      The last page of the Major Explorer assessment opens. Notice the top right corner of this page contains a filter icon. Filter options include: Fit (Best Match), name, credits, salary, hiring demand.

    • The student may also scroll down through the list of recommended majors best matched to the student assessment results. 
      Below the current major box is a section titled, Sorted by best match showing majors available at Dallas College most related to student interests.

    • Click the Go Back hyperlink. 
      At the top left corner of the page, click the link Go Back.

  15. The second menu option is to retake the five step Major Explorer Assessment (first completed during the set-up of your desktop app). 
    The second link under Consider these states, Take the major explorer again. Click the link View details.
    • Step one, click the box to the left of the value that is most important for your career choice: match my interests, high salary, high job demand. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner.

    • Step two, click the radio button to the left of the goal that matches your goal after graduation: start my career, change my career, further my career in my current job, just taking classes, I am a High School student taking classes, transfer to a 4-year or other school. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner.

    • Step three, click the box to the left of up to the three subjects you enjoy: art & music, business, computers, construction trades, English, film/theater, government/law, health, history, math, psychology, science, sports & physical education (P.E.P). To continue, click Next in the lower left corner.

    • Step four, click the box to the left of up to the three activities you enjoy doing: being outdoors, building and fixing things, cooking, drawing/design, helping people, inventing things, keeping people safe, learning about people and cultures, managing and organizing things, teaching, working in a lab, working with animals, working with children, working with technology, writing and researching. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner. 
      Click the box to the left of up to the three activities you enjoy doing: being outdoors, building and fixing things, cooking, drawing/design, helping people, inventing things, keeping people safe, learning about people and cultures, managing and organizing things, teaching, working in a lab, working with animals, working with children, working with technology, writing and researching. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner.

    • Step five, click the box to the left of up to the three fields that interest you: accounting, administrative and support services, architecture, business, communications, computers, diagnostics and medical technology, digital media, education, engineering, finance, graphics/web design, hospitality, human services, life sciences, nursing, physical sciences, programming, protective services, social sciences. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner. 
      Click the box to the left of up to the three fields that interest you: accounting, administrative and support services, architecture, business, communications, computers, diagnostics and medical technology, digital media, education, engineering, finance, graphics/web design, hospitality, human services, life sciences, nursing, physical sciences, programming, protective services, social sciences. To continue, click Next in the lower left corner.

    • Now explore the majors that best match your interests. 
      The last page of the Major Explorer assessment opens showing current major and suggested majors based on assessment results.

    • Select Go back to return to the My Major menu options. 
      At the top left corner of the page, click Go back to return to the previous screen.

  16. The third menu option is to view your Texas Success Initiative Assessment placement scores. This example does not have placement scores. 
    The third link under Consider these states, View your placement test results. Click the link View details.
    • If placement scores are available, they will be listed underneath the title My Placement Scores. Placement scores may include: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), American College Test (ACT), Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA). Notice this example does not have placement scores. 
      The page My placement scores opens. If placement scores are available they will be listed on this page. In this example the section is blank because there are no available assessment scores for this student.

    • Select Go back to return to the My Major menu options. 
      At the top left corner, click the link Go back to return to the previous page.

  17. The fourth menu option is to schedule an academic advising appointment. Selecting this link will return students to the Schedule Appointment page. 
    The fourth link under Consider these states, Any Questions? Schedule some time to meet with your advisor. To schedule an appointment, click the link in this section View Details.
