Academic Probation / Academic Standing

Academic standing is a way Dallas College measures your academic progress. It is based primarily on your cumulative GPA and indicates whether you're meeting academic expectations or may benefit from additional support and resources to help you stay on track.

Academic Probation: Your Path Back to Good Standing

Academic probation is a signal to pause, make a plan and connect with support. It does not define your ability or your future. Dallas College Success Coaches will help you understand your academic standing, identify next steps and build a realistic plan to return to good standing.

What Academic Probation Means

Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0. Your academic standing is reviewed at the end of each term. While on probation, you may have registration requirements and will need to make satisfactory academic progress toward returning to good standing. Students who are on academic probation can review our probation policies.

What You Should Do Now

  • Check your academic standing, notifications and assigned Success Coach in Workday and Navigate.
  • Schedule and attend a meeting with your Success Coach. Be ready to discuss what affected your academic progress.
  • Work with your coach to create an academic success plan, select a manageable course load and connect with campus resources.
  • Meet with your assigned Success Coach before registering or changing your schedule. Your coach can explain requirements connected to your specific academic standing.

  • Follow the requirements associated with your standing and complete agreed-upon check-ins.
  • Use tutoring, counseling, accessibility, basic-needs and other support services early—before challenges become emergencies.
  • Monitor your grades and communicate with instructors throughout the term.

Your Goal

The goal is to earn a term GPA of 2.0 or higher and raise your cumulative GPA to at least 2.0. Your Success Coach can help you understand what is needed based on your record and academic standing.

Academic Standing and Financial Aid Are Different

Academic standing is determined by Dallas College academic policy. Financial aid eligibility is determined separately through Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. A change in one status does not automatically mean the other status has changed. If you receive financial aid, review your SAP status and contact Financial Aid with questions.
