Student Experience: Charlotte D. Berry

“I would recommend Dallas College for lots of reasons, whether someone is a first-time college student or is a working adult preparing for career advancement. There is something offered for everyone, from credit to continuing education classes. My attendance and completion of a degree program from Dallas College was the best decision I could have made in launching my education foundation and career growth.

“Dallas College is one of the best-run community college systems in the country. It lets you build a foundation for your education. The majority of my classes were transferable to UNT without any problems. I found Dallas College a great beginning for my educational goals.”

Charlotte D. Berry earned an associate degree in liberal arts and a Public Administration certificate before transferring to the University of North Texas to earn a bachelor’s degree. She also holds a nonprofit leadership certificate from the Center for Nonprofit Management in partnership with Southern Methodist University. She serves on the board of directors for the African American Museum, DeSoto Park, Leadership SouthWest and DeSoto Business Women’s Alliance. She also served for 11 years as director of program operations for Communities in Schools, Dallas Region — a national stay-in-school program operating in Dallas.

“In a nutshell, the most important thing I learned at Dallas College was respect: respecting the path others choose to take for their lives; respecting someone's time when involved in a group project; respecting the hard work of professors, peers, and philosophers who are working just as hard as you and more.”

“What’s been most fun about my studies is how laid back it is in the classroom. It’s a great teaching method, having such a relaxed style. We can do fun or silly group activities, and we’re still learning. In fact, we’re learning more because we’re seeing things from the kids’ point of view.”

“Through therapy and soul-searching, I came to understand that school had always felt like my safe place growing up. School was my getaway from all the drama at home. That realization helped me understand my desire to work with kids from similar backgrounds.”
