Parents and Family Members of First-Year College Students
The first year of college brings new responsibilities, questions and transitions for students and families alike. The First-Year Experience helps you understand what your student is navigating, what support is available and how you can help along the way.
How To Support Your Student During the First Year
The transition to college is a balance between independence and support. Families play an important role by encouraging responsibility while staying connected.
- Ask open-ended questions about classes and how your student is feeling.
- Remind your student that asking for help is normal and encouraged.
- Support healthy routines around time management and deadlines.
- Talk early and often about finances and important dates.
Success Coaching Is Key
Every first-year student is supported by a success coach. Coaches help students navigate college expectations, stay on track academically and connect to resources when questions or challenges arise. Encourage your student to check in regularly with their success coach!
Understanding Privacy & Communication
College is an important step toward independence. Federal privacy laws (FERPA) protect student records, which means there may be limits to what Dallas College can share directly with families. Ongoing communication between students and families is encouraged.
