Federal Student Aid Eligibility and Drug-Related Convictions

The following information is provided as part of Dallas College's Consumer Information for students.

Under the FAFSA Simplification Act, a conviction for possession or sale of illegal drugs does not, by itself, make a student ineligible for federal student financial aid under Title IV of the Higher Education Act.

The previous automatic periods of federal student aid ineligibility based solely on drug convictions no longer apply.

A separate restriction may still apply if a court has specifically denied federal benefits under the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988.

The U.S. Department of Education checks applicable federal records when processing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students whose FAFSA is affected by a federal drug abuse hold should follow the instructions provided by Federal Student Aid and contact Dallas College Financial Aid for assistance.

All students must continue to meet other applicable federal student aid eligibility requirements.

Dallas College remains committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free educational and working environment. Information about college drug and alcohol policies, legal sanctions, disciplinary actions, and prevention resources is available through the Health and Safety section of Dallas College Consumer Information.
