Feb. 3, 2026
Last year, 66% of Dallas College students experienced at least one form of basic needs insecurity, including food and housing challenges.
That’s why Dallas College is in the barrier busting business. Through our Student Care Network, we remove obstacles so students stay focused on their education.
Here’s how we’re supporting students and tackling some of the most common challenges.
Food Insecurity – Fueling Your Success
Dallas Fort-Worth is the third-hungriest region in the nation, and when surveyed 48% of our students reported experiencing food insecurity in the last 30 days.
Dallas College partners with the North Texas Food Bank to operate 14 on-campus food pantries open to both students and community members. Last year alone we provided nearly half a million meals, resulting in $1.2 million in grocery savings for our students and community. During an interview on CNN, Dallas College Chancellor Justin Lonon shared how the college’s food pantries helped support students and families during our recent winter storm. Watch the clip below.
If you’re needing groceries for yourself or your family, stop by a food pantry on your campus to shop for free.
Housing Insecurity – Creating a Safe Space to Thrive
If you’re struggling to pay rent or utilities, moving frequently or living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions, you’re not alone. In the past year, 55% of Dallas College students experienced housing insecurity, and 14% experienced homelessness.
Dallas College helps students secure and maintain suitable housing or shelter in the Dallas area, so you can get on your feet, stay on your feet and finish school.
Financial Hardships – Helping You Meet Basic Needs
While enrolled, 70% of students have experienced financial difficulties, while 61% said they would struggle to find $500 in an emergency.
Through the Dallas College Emergency Aid program, eligible students can get limited financial assistance for sudden emergencies.
Last year, Dallas College distributed $1.2 million in emergency aid, helping students overcome financial barriers and remain focused on their studies.
Child Care Challenges – Balancing Books and Babies
Parenting students frequently balance school, work and family responsibilities. That’s why our barrier busting business extends to the entire family.
According to the 2025 Student Basic Needs Survey, 23% of respondents missed at least one class due to child care issues. Parenting students are also more likely to attend part-time and experience academic interruptions.
To help support its parenting students, Dallas College now offers child care on six campuses, with our Child Watch program opening on our Richland Campus on Monday, Feb. 2.
In partnership with YMCA, Child Watch provides free, drop-in child care for ages 3-12 on a first-come, first-served basis.
Additional support is available through the Family Care program, which connects parenting students to family care supplies, services and classes focused on parenting, nutrition, wellness and financial literacy.
Transportation Challenges – Helping You Get There
Reliable transportation can be costly and unpredictable. Eligible students can receive a DART GoPass, allowing you to ride public transit for free and get to class without added stress.
Technology Troubles – Closing the Digital Divide
Need a laptop and internet access? We’ve got you. Dallas College has a limited number of hotspot-enabled laptops to lend to students on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit your campus’ Learning Commons (library) to check out a laptop. Computer labs are also available for general student use.
Clothing Needs – Looking Sharp on a Student Budget
Whether you need interview attire, everyday clothing or children’s apparel, Dallas College’s free clothing closets are here to help.
Our clothing closets, located on each campus, offer new and gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, along with shoes and accessories.
Students can shop once a month and receive a complete outfit or up to five items each visit.
Health and Wellness – Supporting Your Mind and Body for Success
Dallas College recognizes that students’ lives extend beyond the classroom. Your academic success is closely tied to physical health, emotional well-being and personal development.
Through our Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Dallas College provides the resources to help you stay physically and emotionally well throughout your academic journey.
Students can visit a registered nurse at their campus health center to address a variety of health concerns, including:
- General health information and confidential health counseling
- Over-the-counter (nonprescription) medicines such as Tylenol, aspirin and antacids for those 18 and older
- First aid for minor illness and injuries
- Vaccinations
- Tuberculosis skin tests
- Screenings: pregnancy, hearing and vision
- HIV and STI screening resources
Through Counseling and Psychological Services, licensed counselors can help you navigate common college challenges, including stress, anxiety and motivation.
Last year, more than 11,600 students accessed health services, with 83% persisting from Fall to Spring. Meanwhile, 4,000 students used Counseling and Psychological Services, leading to a 91% persistence rate.
The results are clear: when students are supported holistically, they’re more likely to stay on track and complete their education.
CNN Interview With Dallas College Chancellor Justin Lonon
We have 14 food pantries that we operate year round, to serve our students and serve our community. And so as this was nearing, we really geared up with our partners to prepare for it because we know it's a critical time for so many people.
