Student Experience: Christine Fox

“I decided to enroll in the Visual Communications program at Brookhaven on the advice of a friend. I fell in love with it from the beginning. I had always had a rudimentary interest in drawing and color and loved playing with design. It felt right when I joined the program, and I found I could do something I thought was fun to earn a living.

“The best part of the whole experience for me was getting to know the faculty and realizing they really cared about my success. They are passionate about what they do, and it translates itself well in the classroom. Going back to school over the age of 50 was a little scary, but I was soon made to feel like one of the team by teachers and students alike.

“I have learned so much about design and feel today I am a real asset to my employer. If it hadn’t been for this program I would possibly still be unemployed, or at the very least doing something that is mundane and just a way to pass time from 9 to 5. Today I have a great job using the skills I learned at Brookhaven and am still improving on them, I might add.

“The biggest things I learned were that you are never too old to learn and that taking something you love to do and making it a career is not only a great idea, but it’s also a sound idea.

“I was nervous about trying to sell myself in the job market at my age. However, I found that armed with my portfolio and the knowledge base provided by Brookhaven, prospective employers were very eager to see my work, and it didn’t take long for me to find my place. I work in the Dallas design district and am loving every minute of it. I recommend Dallas College and especially the Visual Communications program to anyone who will listen.”

Christine Fox earned an associate degree in Visual Communications from Brookhaven and began working in September 2007 at Solara Lighting. She exercises creative control over all of the company’s design work, from letterhead and business cards to photography of the company’s handmade ironwork, using Photoshop skills learned in the Visual Communications program. She also works on catalogs for the company.

“The instructors were one of the highlights of my experience. They were approachable, supportive, and genuinely invested in our success ... Their encouragement helped me grow as a designer, stay current with emerging trends, and even led to the co-op opportunity that launched my professional journey at Eastfield.”

“A lot of my creative inspiration comes from moments where I feel lost or uncertain. I turn to art to process those feelings. It helps me make sense of things I don’t fully understand yet.”

“There aren’t that many professors who will really sit down and explain something to you, but here at North Lake they will. They really care about the students, and I think this is one of the best video programs in the area.”
