Student Experience: Herman Cardona

A former student of the Mountain View Art department, Herman Cardona currently works as a Library Associate for the Dallas Public Library. Since the start of his employment in 2015, Herman has worked as an Exhibitions Coordinator, developed the library's circulating collection, created art programming for patrons, worked on archives housed in the library and built partnerships with outside art organizations. As an Exhibitions Coordinator, Herman recruits local professional artists to exhibit their work in the library's art gallery, the Lillian Bradshaw Gallery. In this space, local artists have the opportunity to exhibit their work. For many, it's their first solo exhibition. With this and other duties held at the library, Herman's mission is always to expand access to the arts for all members of the community.

“A lot of my creative inspiration comes from moments where I feel lost or uncertain. I turn to art to process those feelings. It helps me make sense of things I don’t fully understand yet.”

“The flexibility is the best thing. I’ve only had to come in to campus for tests. And even though I don’t live that far away, the cost of gas these days is a major factor in my decision to take courses online. Distance learning works for my budget and for my schedule.”

“In the beginning, I was hesitant because I didn’t want the courses to be too easy — I wanted to actually get something out of them. But once I realized my online courses were really challenging, I kept going back for more.”
