Student Experience: Liliana Rodriguez
“My sister and I both started by taking a few introductory classes at Eastfield. One of the first classes I took was Photoshop through the Digital Media program, and I immediately knew I had found something I loved. After that course, I enrolled in the program and began building the skills that would shape my career.
In 2007, I started working part-time in the Eastfield College Communications and Community Relations Department as a co-op student. It was an incredible opportunity to apply what I was learning in the classroom to real projects.
What I enjoy most about my work is the creative process. Design offers endless possibilities. While we follow established design standards and best practices, there is also a great deal of freedom to develop ideas and create meaningful visual solutions.
The instructors were one of the highlights of my experience. They were approachable, supportive, and genuinely invested in our success. They taught us the importance of meeting deadlines, staying organized, balancing creativity with professionalism, critical thinking, and viewing projects from different perspectives—skills that have been invaluable throughout my career. Their encouragement helped me grow as a designer, stay current with emerging trends, and even led to the co-op opportunity that launched my professional journey at Eastfield.
My advice to students interested in creative fields is simple: never stop learning. Stay curious, pay attention to new technologies and industry trends, and continue building your portfolio. Employers want to see your technical and soft skills and your willingness to grow. Most importantly, develop your own style and perspective. Even though I've completed my degrees and certificates, I still make learning a priority. In a creative profession, continuous learning is one of the keys to long-term success.”
